Galvanic isolators

To meet the current EU standard (ENISO 13,297) it is required to connect the ground of the AC shore power installation on ships and yachts to the ship's mass. The ship's mass is reconnected to the hull, fuel tank, engine, propeller and shaft, zinc anodes, etc. Because your ship is grounded the shore RCD will jump in case of a ground fault. This creates a safe situation on board. This advantage is also a disadvantage. Because all ships are now connected through the shore AC power ground, there is galvanic action between the ships and the shore. This is because ships and shore docks are made of different metals.

Galvanic Isolator between the shore and the ship’s ground

As generally known, there are potential differences between different metals. To eliminate this difference in potential a so-called galvanic isolator is installed between the shore ground and the ship. This galvanic isolator provides a threshold voltage of 1 volt. This eliminates the potential difference between the metals. Since the galvanic isolator is placed between the ground connection a solid construction is of vital importance! Therefore, the galvanic isolator is capable of processing a very high current during ground fault. Especially when a low weight is desired, the galvanic isolator is preferred to the isolation transformer. Of course an isolation transformer yields the same result as a galvanic isolator. The Galvanic Isolator is constructed from an anodized aluminum heat sink and the electrical connections are of high quality materials. The electronic circuitry is embedded enabling it to function even under difficult circumstances and making no further maintenance necessary.
