Newsletter January 2017

Our first restyled newsletter!

We're pleased to present you with our restyled newsletter, in which we'll regularly be updating you on the latest developments in the battery market. We'll also be setting out to add to your knowledge of batteries and the related accessories. Since this is the first in a new cycle of newsletters, it's been given the highly appropriate theme of cyclic batteries, using both AGM and lithium technology. Intercel Europe:

Your expert in batteries!

Mobility scooter

To demonstrate how versatile our battery products are, we'll be using each newsletter to showcase an interesting application for which Intercel Europe has provided energy solutions. For this month we've chosen the mobility scooter. The user strongly depends on the reliability of the battery and - accordingly - the mobility scooter itself. Personal mobility is largely determined by the mobility scooter's efficiency and operating range.

Mobility scooters are used and recharged several times a day, which calls for a battery that is up to the challenge of cyclic usage. Intercel Europe's range includes various cyclic AGM battery types, which provide the certainty and reliability that mobility scooter users need. Using the right cyclic battery ensures that the mobility scooter at least makes it to the end of the day without having to be recharged.

The mobility scooter's reliability depends not only on the battery, but also on the accessories. All of the battery's qualities will come to nothing if the wrong charger is used, for example. For that reason, using the right battery accessories is just as important as choosing the right battery.

Technical knowledge

Cyclic use

In the 'Technical Knowledge' column we'll be setting out to broaden your knowledge of technical battery terminology. Jack, our technical expert, will be clearly explaining a technical term for you in each newsletter. In this edition Jack explains precisely what we mean by the 'cyclic use' of a battery. "Many applications benefit from the use of a battery that is specifically designed for cyclic use, and mobility scooters are a good example of this. What we mean by a battery's cycle is that we charge it up and then it discharges again, and so on. As time passes the capacity of a battery declines as it is repeatedly charged and discharged. The more cycles a battery undergoes, the more capacity it loses.

The amount of a capacity a battery loses during the first few years is barely noticeable, but eventually a point is reached where the battery capacity has declined so much that it no longer meets the application's energy requirement. The time has come to replace the battery.

Batteries specifically designed for cyclic use last much longer than other types, which is explained by their composition. They are designed to be frequently charged and discharged without losing their capacity as quickly. A battery that has been especially designed for cyclic use is therefore highly recommended for applications in which the battery is regularly discharged and therefore needs frequent charging.

Who is...

Dick Lotze

In the 'Who is...' section we introduce you to the people behind Intercel Europe. Our first interviewee is Dick Lotze, our international transport and logistics expert. "I'm Dick Lotze, 41 years old. I started at Power Storage Europe as a warehouse employee in 2001 and moved to Intercel when the two companies merged. My current tasks include coordinating Intercel's international export shipments.

I've always enjoyed knowing all the ins and outs of what my colleagues do so that I have a clearer understanding of what they need to meet our customers' requirements. That way, I'm able to adjust my work accordingly.

Preparing shipments for export sometimes involves having to arrange for the products to be received, checked and listed before being picked and packed. I help to coordinate the departments so that the shipment is ready at the dock on time. Before that I arrange for the best price and delivery options with our forwarders. For our lithium batteries I make sure that the transporters are informed of the shipment content and that all of the correct paperwork is drawn up and added."

Product knowledge

Lithium batteries

Intercel Europe not only stocks cyclic batteries based on AGM technology, but also lithium type batteries that are able to deliver reliable cyclic performance. Lithium technology is relatively new and its use is not yet widespread. As well as the outstanding cyclic performance of lithium batteries, they also offer a number of other highly attractive benefits.

Despite a lithium battery's heavy-duty cyclic performance, it is relatively lightweight. That makes it ideal for applications where both good performance and lightness count. A lithium battery is a good choice for mobile applications on the one hand and applications that are difficult to access on the other.

The lithium batteries stocked by Intercel Europe can also be described as true smart batteries. Our lithium batteries feature a BMS (Battery Management System) as standard, which fully automatically monitors the charging and discharging current. This prevents the battery from being overcharged or discharging too deeply. The system guarantees that the battery has a longer life cycle than a comparable AGM model.

Farm robot

Robot automation is becoming increasingly commonplace. Robots are even found in cowsheds. JOZ develops and manufactures advanced farm robots. Intercel equips their 'slurry scrapers' with high capacity cyclic batteries, which gives the robots a large operating range. In this video JOZ explains why Intercel is the preferred supplier for this type of battery.
